A ROMANTIC SOIRÉE ANN ELLIOTT-GOLDSCHMID VIOLIN WITH GUEST STEPHEN RUNGE PIANO (BMUS ’01)

A recital of romances and sonatas exploring the personal and artistic relationships between Robert Schumann, his wife Clara Schumann, and their protégé Johannes Brahms. Canadian composer, Jean Coulthard’s Duo Sonata, written 100 years after the Schumanns’ works, is similarly inspired by a partnership of love and music.

CRUCIFIXION OF THE EARTH LAFAYETTE STRING QUARTET WITH GUEST POETS JAN ZWICKY & ROBERT BRINGHURST

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Lafayette String Quartet is joined by renowned Canadian poets in an updated version of Haydn’s classic work for string quartet, Seven Last Words: Crucifixion of the Earth.


Steinway & UVic 12 Year Celebration The UVic School of Music became Canada’s first all-Steinway school in 2008 when we acquired 63 new Steinway pianos. Our students, faculty, guest performers and concertgoers have been appreciating the beauty and quality of these incredible instruments ever since. Join us in celebrating our 12th anniversary as an all-Steinway school with faculty, guest and student performances. Pre-concert events will include a virtual reality tour of the Steinway factory, demonstrations of the inner workings of the piano, plus a chance to experience the Steinway Spirio | r, the world’s finest high-resolution player piano capable of live performance capture and playback. ARTHUR ROWE PIANO

Steinway artist Arthur Rowe performs an all-Beethoven program. Rowe is a critically acclaimed recitalist, soloist with orchestra and chamber musician, as well as co-head of piano performance at UVic.

MARK ANDERSON PIANO

Mark Anderson performs music by W. A. Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Julius Röntgen, and Franz Schubert. A celebrated recitalist, soloist and chamber musician, Anderson is Associate Professor of Piano at UBC’s School of Music and owner and Executive Director of New World Music Academy in Pleasanton, California. He is also a Steinway artist. This concert is generously sponsored by Tom Lee Music.

EMERGING STEINWAY STARS Join us for a concert showcasing some of the brightest stars from the School of Music’s piano studios. Steinway’s latest high-resolution player piano, the Spirio | r, will also be on site for a demonstration.

BRUCE VOGT PIANO

Bruce Vogt performs a dynamic program of works by Frédéric Chopin and Claude Debussy. Among the elite of Canadian pianists, Vogt appears regularly in concert within Canada, but has also inspired audiences around the world. Vogt is co-head of piano performance at UVic.

VIANO STRING QUARTET Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, the Viano String Quartet has already proved itself one of North America’s most exciting young groups. Top prize winners in several international competitions, they are now the quartet-in-residence at the Colburn School and are performing extensively all over the globe. The Lafayette String Quartet, in partnerhsip with the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, host guest speaker Paul Mohapel (PhD, psychology) to discuss recent startling research and scientific data about some of the negative impacts digital distraction and multitasking are having on our behaviour and neurological capacities. PEOPLE AND PLACES The opening concert of the UVic Wind Symphony’s 2019/20 season brings together works about the people and places that have inspired and impacted wind band composers such as Cait Nishimura, Percy Grainger, Jodie Blackshaw and John Mackey.

TIME AND SPACE This program explores the concepts of time and space, from early works written for wind band to innovative and modern pieces that push the boundaries of our expectations. Hear music by Gordon Jacob, Julie Giroux, Peter Meechan and Katherine Bergman.

SEA AND SONG WITH THE NADEN BAND OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY

Now into its 7th year of this unique collaboration, the UVic Wind Symphony is delighted to celebrate with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy on their 80th anniversary with an exciting concert of classic and contemporary repertoire for wind ensemble.

REAL TO REEL The final concert of the UVic Wind Symphony’s 2019/20 season features an eclectic program of works by composers who have crossed over between stage and film, including music by Erich Korngold, John Williams and William Walton.
